Early childhood educators give so much of themselves every day to support the learning and development of the District of Columbia’s children. DC Early Educator Experience (DC Early EdX) ― an event by educators for educators held during the D.C. Month of the Young Child ― is an opportunity for early childhood educators to decompress, connect with and learn from each other, raise their voices, and celebrate the important role they play for children, families and the entire community.

Across America, care workers help raise our children, assist seniors as they age with dignity, and support people with disabilities — giving families peace of mind and making it possible for millions of Americans to earn a paycheck while their loved ones are safe and secure. These unsung heroes strengthen our communities and form the backbone of our Nation’s economy. This month, we honor their extraordinary contributions and commit to supporting them with better pay, better benefits, and the recognition they have long deserved.

President Biden wants to give Americans four more years of free school: two years of pre-K and two of community college. In a two-part series, Today, Explained’s Haleema Shah explores the challenges of expanding public education.
Listen to the interview below on how DC's universal pre-K program affected infant and toddler care.

Angelique Speight-Marshall has come up with an ingenious idea to help the toddlers she looks after practice social distancing: She gave each of them a walkie-talkie. The kids squeal with delight as they run as far away from each other as possible, to talk.
"You have to think outside the box," Speight-Marshall says, "because the pandemic is changing the way health and safety practices have been used over the years."

Angelique Speight-Marshall is the owner of Mrs P's Child and Family Services. She has struggled to stay open, but she has a personal reason for doing so.
"I have a daughter who is 28 with special needs, and I understand the importance of people being able to go to work because I was one of those parents."
But the majority of the children she cares for are new. Several of her regular parents had to withdraw their children.

On July 6th and July 7th, DC Early Learning Collaborative, The Under 3 DC Coalition, and DCAEYC called out the ECE Community and Stakeholders to meet at Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C. for the #SaveChildCareRally after we learned that Mayor Muriel Bowser cut out $5 million from the child care subside program in her FY 21 proposal. Later, we found out it was miscalculation and the funds were restored into the budget. It was through the advocacy and bravery of SPACEs In Action leaders like Angelique Speight-Marshall, owner of Ms. P’s Child & Families Services, taking action to demand $10 million now and $10 million in FY 21 in child care stabilization funds.

Angelique Speight felt called to stay open to make sure society keeps functioning. “Who’s going to take care of the patients if nobody takes care of the doctors’ and the nurses’ children? How are you going to eat if the grocery stores are closed?” she asked. “I feel as though I’m doing a good service, not just for children but for the community.” Every parent of the children she’s caring for has an essential role: a pharmacist, a lab technician, a nurse, and a home health aide.

Angelique Speight-Marshall, who has operated Miss P’s Daycare out of her Northwest Washington home for two decades, is one of the few facilities to remain open. She said many of her clients work in health care and need to go to work.

Miss P’s Daycare is trying to stay open.
The already-cautious Angelique Speight-Marshall — who has operated the day care out of her Northwest Washington home for two decades — is being hypervigilant as the coronavirus outbreak threatens her operation and income.

I run a home-based child care facility in DC called Ms. P’s Child and Family Service. As the owner of a small business providing care for our youngest residents and future leaders, I make it possible for countless parents to go to work every day confident that their children are safe, learning and loved. I provide an invaluable service, I create jobs, and I pay taxes. I fuel the economy.
